Use the conversion formula
Separate the whole number from the decimal fraction. For 7.25 hours, the whole number is 7 hours and 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes. Therefore, 7.25 decimal hours equals 7 hours and 15 minutes.
For 7.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so the duration is 7 hours and 45 minutes.
Common decimal-hour examples
7.50 hours is 7 hours 30 minutes; 6.25 hours is 6 hours 15 minutes; 8.10 hours is 8 hours 6 minutes because 0.10 × 60 = 6. Decimal parts are fractions of an hour, not minutes written after a decimal point.
That is why 7.30 decimal hours is not the same as 7 hours 30 minutes. 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes.
Use enough precision
If a value has repeating decimals, rounding may be needed. Keep the original value during intermediate calculations where possible, then round only according to your timesheet or payroll procedure.
Do not mix clock notation such as 7:30 with decimal notation such as 7.50 without converting properly.
Quick check
Multiply the decimal portion by 60. The result should be a number of minutes from 0 to less than 60. If it equals or exceeds 60, the input may need to be normalized.
