The simple formula
Calculate 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. So 3 hours 45 minutes is 3.75 decimal hours, and 8 hours 45 minutes is 8.75 decimal hours.
For any duration, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours.
Quarter-hour values
15 minutes = 0.25; 30 minutes = 0.50; 45 minutes = 0.75. The quarter-hour pattern makes decimal conversion easier when a time entry is exactly on a 15-minute increment.
For values such as 20 or 35 minutes, divide by 60 rather than estimating from the quarter-hour chart.
Timesheet example
Suppose you worked 7 hours 45 minutes after unpaid breaks. The decimal value is 7.75. If you worked two shifts of 7.75 hours each, the total is 15.50 hours before any additional adjustments.
Check whether your timekeeping system expects decimal hours or hours-and-minutes notation before entering the number.
