The calculation

There are 60 minutes in one hour. Divide 15 by 60 to get 0.25. Therefore, 2 hours 15 minutes is 2.25 decimal hours, and 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 decimal hours.

Use the same method for any number of minutes: minutes ÷ 60 = decimal portion of an hour.

Quarter-hour conversion chart

15 minutes = 0.25 hours; 30 minutes = 0.50 hours; 45 minutes = 0.75 hours; 60 minutes = 1.00 hour. These are quarter-hour increments that are easy to check mentally.

Do not write 15 minutes as .15 hours. A decimal fraction represents part of 60 minutes, not part of 100 minutes.

Use it in a timesheet

If your net shift is 7 hours 15 minutes, enter 7.25 when a decimal-hour field is required. If you have several shifts, convert each duration consistently or total the minutes first and convert the final duration.

Your employer may have a specific rounding method, so check instructions before finalizing payroll records.
