An “8-hour shift” can mean eight hours actually worked or an eight-hour period on the schedule. The difference often comes down to whether a meal break is unpaid.

Eight hours worked plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch
If you need to work eight paid hours and take a 30-minute unpaid lunch, the total time from clock-in to clock-out is 8 hours and 30 minutes. For a 9:00 AM start, that would usually mean a 5:30 PM finish.
An eight-hour scheduled span
If your schedule runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the total span is eight hours. Subtract a 30-minute unpaid lunch and the net time is 7 hours and 30 minutes.
What if the break is paid?
If a break is paid and counts as work time under your employer’s policy, you generally should not subtract it when calculating paid hours. Policies and legal requirements vary, so confirm how your workplace records breaks.
Simple examples
9:00 AM–5:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch = 7 hours 30 minutes net. 9:00 AM–5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch = 8 hours net. 8:00 AM–4:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch = 8 hours net.

Example: an eight-hour shift with lunch
A shift from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM spans 8 hours and 30 minutes. Subtracting a 30-minute unpaid lunch leaves exactly 8 working hours. This is why the clock span can be longer than the scheduled work duration.
